Harper scanned the alley outside the office but couldn’t see anyone. Was Apollo staying hidden and waiting for her to move? She had no way of knowing and couldn’t stay there all day. Zeus and Rella would surely be back by now, and with a bit of luck, they’d run slap bang into the police at the container.

Harper knew she needed to get herself to the policemen she’d seen, which either meant going back through the hole in the fence or finding the entrance to the industrial park. Without running into Apollo. Her body ached and her head throbbed, reminding her what lay in store if he found her again. The other alternate was finding a phone.

She heard the sound of a vehicle getting closer and pressed her face to the window to see the wider road running by the ends of the warehouses. A pickup truck rolled by, packed full with what looked like her friendly saviors.

“Here goes nothing,” she muttered to herself and opened the door a crack.

She listened but couldn’t hear anything beyond air conditioners and distant traffic. Harper slipped out of the office and made her way to the end of the building, staying tight against the wall. At the road which the pickup had left down, she peeked both ways. To her left, a hundred yards and several buildings away, was the hole in the fence. To her right, three more warehouses before the fence that ran along the road, leading to the scrubland and the container.

Hearing footsteps behind her, Harper ducked around the corner and took a quick look back down the alley. Someone had run along the path at the opposite end of the buildings, but she didn’t get a good look. Maybe a white shirt? She got the impression it was a woman, but it could have been her mind playing tricks.

Not wanting to risk running into the wrong person, she hobbled across the road to the row of buildings on the other side, continuing until she reached the pathway behind them. Another fence separated her from several apartment buildings and for a moment, she considered scaling the wire, but in bare feet and the stupid dress, Harper figured she’d end up snagged and hanging like a rag doll for Apollo to find.

Turning to her right, she jogged along the back of the buildings, wincing with each step, carefully checking the first alleyway before crossing. At the second gap, she glanced around the corner and saw a policeman in a suit walking along the path behind the buildings she’d been hiding in. She opened her mouth to yell just as a large hand covered half her face and stifled her cry.

“I don’t care what Zeus says,” Apollo hissed in her ear. “I’m going to make you scream for mercy before I finish you off once and for all.”
